2001

STEER-A-YEAR

Since 1993, South Devon steers have been on test in the Olds College Steer-A-Year program consecutively for the past 8 years. Although only a small population of steers is actually placed on test (5 head per breed per year), the test has proved invaluable as an indicator of the performance of South Devon cattle on test. South Devon steers consistently perform well in both ADG and Feed Efficiency. Over the last number of years, the calves have also proven to be very profitable to feed.

At the completion of the 2001 test, the pen of 5 South Devon x Simmental steers, contributed by North Paddle Farm of Mayerthorpe, AB, had the highest rate of gain at 3.76 lbs/day with a feed efficiency of 5.2 lbs feed/lb gain. They were also quite profitable to feed and averaged $92.02 profit per head. They had an average lean meat yield (LMY%) of 58.9% with AA marbling.
