NEWS
Important Registry Information:
We have been awarded some Federal monies to help us promote our
Association and recoup some of the losses from the BSE years.
Most of this grant will be used for additional advertising and
promotion. However some funds have been allocated to help us to
increase our cattle registrations and update our database.
The Board has decided to allow the first 200 applications for
animals over 18 months received by the CLRC to be at the reduced
rate of $45/head for purebreds/fullbloods (instead of the regular
$60) or $25/head for percentage animals (instead of the regular
$40/head). There is no upper age limit.
In order to be eligible for the overage discount, please correct
your whole herd summary by deleting sold/dead animals and return
to CLRC by January 31, 2006 together with your membership fees
etc. Even if you do not wish to take advantage of this discount
please mail or fax your corrected animal list to CLRC (fax 613-731-0704
or email clrc@clrc.ca
) as soon as possible.
Show/Promotion News:
We are hoping to have our own breed show in November 2006. We
need a minimum of 30 animals for both Agribition and Farmfair.
Please answer the following questions and return to Teresa Walker
by phone (306-646-4460 or 306-646-2070), fax (306-646-4460) email
(teresa.walker@sasktel.net)
or snail mail (Box 44, Redvers, SK SOC 2H0) as soon as possible:
- Would
you be able to show South Devons in November 2006?
- If
so, how many could you bring?
- If
you answered Yes would prefer Agribition or Farmfair, Edmonton?
We
need to book space with either of these shows by the end of January.
Thanks.

News:
2005
Field day was held at my farm near Redvers, Saskatchewan. I was
overwhelmed by the number of people who traveled a total of around
4000 hours - from BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Minnesota,USA.
Also present was the World President - Dar Giess also from Minnesota.
We had something in common that had drawn us together - the future
prosperity of South Devon Cattle in Canada!
The weather was kind to us, we looked at cattle, munched 108 burgers
and we talked and we talked
..and then some!
When it comes to the World Congress here in 2008 I would recommend
anyone to "open their farm" - it's a great incentive to
tidy up the farm and you don't have to travel!
Even though I only have a few purebred South Devons I had plenty
of compliments on my cattle - even though the sickly one felt compelled
to parade himself at the front of the herd! (He did recover after
a good shot the next day - amazing?)
THANK YOU ALL FOR MAKING SUCH A HUGE EFFORT TO BE THERE.
We then went for supper in Carlyle - a fair feast and thanks to
all bidders who helped to raise over $1100 in "the hat sale".
This extra cash will be used to promote South Devons in Canada.
The Annual Meeting on Sunday was quite a spirited event! Minutes
will be on the website soon and a copy enclosed with this newsletter.
It was evident, as breeders of South Devons, we have to move forward
and I felt the meeting was a big success.

Reports:
My report on the 2005 World Congress in the UK to the Canadian Beef
Breeds Council is now on our website under "What's New".
It took days to write so please don't tell me if you didn't read
it!
We're still waiting the final numbers from the Olds College Steer
a Year trials. I guess the colleges get longer vacations than we
do! Anyway we're in the lead - both for daily liveweight gain and
feed conversion. As soon as the results are available I'll get them
on the website. At least for now the purebred South Devon Moms produced
the best crossbred calves! I'm working on a good story for the press!
Ideas:
Please call or e-mail me with any ideas you may have for advertising,
