The first cattle of the South Devon beef breed were imported to Canada in 1969 from Southwest England. In 1975 the Canadian South Devon Association (CSDA) was formed and recognized as a breed association under the Livestock Pedigree Act of Canada. The CSDA is a non-profit organization that derives funding from memberships and Whole Herd Enrolment (WHE) fees.
South Devon are moderate framed, solid red or black cattle with excellent feed conversion capabilities. Research from the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (MARC) and Oklahoma State University show South Devon surpass other Continental breeds in retail product yield and carcass quality. South Devon meat cuts earned the highest meat tenderness score out of 16 other beef breeds at MARC. In study after study the breed has ranked at the top on carcass quality evaluations. Currently South Devon cattle are being finished on grass in Australia and New Zealand with excellent results in marbling and tenderness. This economic trait of feed efficiency is particularly important during times of high feed and interest costs. Combined with good marbling potential and meat that is extremely tender, flavorful and juicy, South Devon cattle excel from gate to plate.
South Devon cattle have a quiet disposition, which means both cows and bulls handle easily under pasture and range conditions. This quiet disposition is an important economic trait, which passes on through cross breeding. It makes herd management easier and improves rate and efficiency of gain.
The value of South Devon genetics are recognized by beef producers across the country. "I maintain a 250 head cow herd, with a South Devon and Maine-Anjou-cross base. I started using South Devon genetics in the early 90's through an A.I. breeding program and kept all of those first heifers for replacements. Very pleased with the results, I later purchased South Devon bulls. The cattle - both bulls and cows - are very docile to handle, calve without problem, are easy keeping with rich milk. The calves sell very well in the fall, with buyers particularly noting the excellent hair coat which increases sales ring appeal." - Doug Kerr, Ninette, MB
South Devon cattle can be found in pastures and on the range across Canada, Australia, Brazil, Great Britain, Mexico, New Zealand, South Africa, and the United States.
Canadian South Devon breeders continually work to develop the breed and its distinctive strengths.
"South Devon, the British breed quietly and efficiently converting grass to quality marbled beef".
